The "Very Old Bike" Run
by Allan Boyd

This was the first run for "Very Old Bikes" pre 1950' a run requested by some of our members, however it also included bikes under 250cc. It proved popular considering the wet weather.

There was a great selection of pre 1950 bikes, all of which were over 250cc and four strokes and 8 girder fork machines; the under 250cc bikes were outnumbered by the two strokes.

The rain showers moved in before we left the Spanish Club; everyone was huddled in the Club's entrance; many riders were busy putting on their wet weather gear. One rider arrived with an empty tank only to find the back up trailer had no fuel either; not to be beaten some fuel was syphoned from the back up trailer's vehicle fuel tank!

A break in the weather - so it was follow the leader through some of Canberra's more "upper class" suburbs to the Courtney's Old English Pub in Garran. We lost one rider on a BSA who was seen returning to the Spanish Club to pick up a bag left behind and also in search of a lost tail light.

On arrival at Garran, our hosts Bob and Louise Courtney had prepared a delicious and enormous morning tea spread that served as lunch for most of us; we were totally spoilt. Also, Bob had a selection of his bikes and cars on display that included a recently acquired 1920s bike requiring a good restoration. Thank you Bob and Louise.

Our timing was good, as the showers were getting heavier and more frequent, so it was decided to stay and consume more of Louise's hot porcupine meatballs, cakes, slices, pikelets with jam and cream, tea and coffee - yummmy.

Prior to Sunday, I had arranged to pick up Gerry Hampson in the back up vehicle. For some who may not be aware, Gerry is a senior non-rider these days, a "Life Member" of our club, and who still enjoys the motorcycle scene and our company. He was returned home safely to wife Betty bearing a plate of Louise's cakes for afternoon tea.

In all a good event for the very old and small bikes, and no customers for the back up vehicle!
