ANNUAL GLUHWEIN BREAKFAST,
RIDE AND SOUP RUN

Sunday, 14 August 2011

This year's event was another very successful run for the VVC and attracted many attendees from other Motorcycling groups in the Canberra area. This year was up on last year but down on the 2009 attendance. Once again we had to opt for Casuarina Sands as the Cotter recreational area is still a construction playground. We had approximately 90 bikes (at least 50 VVC bikes), and over 140 attendees at the BBQ site. The Gluhwein event is the third most involved on the VVC calendar in terms of food and hard work for members, the major ones are of course the Swap Meet and the Annual Rally.

Once again the ever reliable John Broad and others were hard at it on Friday and Saturday, picking up the victuals and gathering all of the hardware for the event. On Sunday morning John Broad and others were out before 8am to secure the Casuarina Sands site and get the BBQ's, urns and everything on the go. The start time was supposed to be 9.30, but there were plenty of early arrivals before 8.15am, so by the 9am gazetted start time the breakfast line was well and truly established.

They were a hungry lot this year and by 10.00 am we started to run low on Coffee (temporarily). The weather was absolutely perfect although it had started to look threatening towards Corin.

At around 10.30am, the Riders Brief took place, with the attendees invited to take a leisurely ride to Corin Dam and back. In the intervening time the Sausages, Gluhwein, Soups and other delicacies would be readied. There was also a cautionary note about gravel on some corners en route to Corin Dam.

It did not rain during the Corin Dam ride, but it looked awful threatening. The return trip was pleasant but a few riders narrowly avoided a spill when a wallaby darted across the road between them. Upon their return the riders were treated to four different and tasty soups, prepared by Chris Boyd, Bill Lewis, Cheryl Boyce and Ann Toet. There was also fresh buttered bread, sausage sandwiches, Ray Scott's patented Gluhwein which filled any space left from breakfast. Ray's Gluhwein is supposed to have had the alcohol boiled off, but I wouldn't be too sure of that. Together with carrot slab cake, mini-muffins and doughnuts. There were also other cake and slice treats made by Chris Boyd to tempt the palate.

Caroline Bradly and Anthony Meany piloted the back-up trailer and I seem to recall an Ariel aboard at some stage. Hope that it is nothing serious.

All in, it was such a great day and many thanks to everyone, especially John Broad. Waine Summerfield was the BBQ chef stalwart throughout the day and there were many other people involved in the setting up and cleaning up required for this size of event. Many people forget that after every function there is a lot of cleaning up of tables and BBQ facilities, and rubbish to gather. Then, the BBQ and back-up trailers have to be taken back to their storage area and prepped for their next excursion. Utensils, etc from the BBQ trailer must also be washed and all made ready for the next function.

A big thanks also to Mick Gentleman for his efforts in making the Cotter Dam project Staff aware of our presence on the roads in the area on the Sunday.

Very well done to all concerned and see you on the next run.

ROLL CALL
A very good turn-out in anyone's book. The VVC has done its' best to decipher names/bikes /etc as written into the attendance book. If you or your bike are incorrectly described, please take more care writing them in next time. We love to record your attendance as it helps people remember "the bloke with the 70 Bonny or such", but we are limited in our ability to translate entries. This is not a criticism, just an observation/recommendation. Some members also forgot to record their attendance. Best Regards, Peter Toet.
