Berry "Kickstart" Rally
11-12 June 2011

What a hoot!! Check out the number of VVC bikes in the roll call below; it's a testament to the high quality and popular Rally hosted by the Shoalhaven Historic Vehicle Club.

Following some sound advice, Craig and I had decided to travel to Berry on Friday via Tarago and Nerriga (after a pie at Bungendore). With only 3 KM of well graded gravel and beautiful scenery along the way, we got to the Showgrounds with still plenty of daylight to pitch the tent and unload the bikes. Dick, Mick, Rob, Marty and Co had the camp fire roaring which was our haven from the cold. That night the Shoalhaven club put on minestrone and chicken soups which was warmly welcomed.

Saturday morning rolled around as did the cloud cover but we were pumped and ready for the ride. One tiny itty bitty glitch though was my trusty RD deciding to bog down at low speed when we returned from getting fuel. The points had closed up so a quick fix was in order and we made the start in plenty of time.

The ride out to the morning tea stop was lovely and the spot by the ocean at the foot of some cliffs (I have no idea where we were) was stunning. The little car park soon filled up with close to 100 bikes much to the astonishment of the few cars there to quietly enjoy the view. Not sure if it was the classic bikes they were there to see...

The ride back for lunch was via either a long or short route. Craig and I swapped bikes as my RD was still having a minor issue. We chose the long route as we were having too much fun to cut it short. The Marshals did an excellent job in clearly marking out the routes. Back at the Showgrounds, the judging area soon filled with a huge variety of bikes ranging from Bernie Medway's 1924 FN to Jonathon Hawkin's new KTM RC8. The only disappointment was that there were no Veteran bikes entered.

The presentation dinner was held at the Showgrounds with a sumptuous feast of roast lamb and/or pork along with all the trimmings. Of the 14 trophies on offer, VVC took out 7 of them which was impressive. Actually, with 35 VVC bikes (and 2 honorary ring ins) we made up 36% of the Rally! Below is the list of winners including The King of the Rally: All hail King Bernie!

Sunday morning was a tad damp, actually I think there was close to 25mm of rain over night and it was still drizzling during breakfast. The organisers wisely chose to amend their plans and opted for a short run and return back to the Showgrounds for morning tea. Craig and I decided instead to pack up the tent during a break in the rain and didn't go on the ride but the reports were that it was really lovely.

The club put on a massive morning tea with lots of tasty pastries. I'm not sure if they went out for another ride after morning tea as we'd loaded up and headed for home.

Thanks to the Shoalhaven Historic Vehicle Club for your hospitality and for yet another wonderful Rally - see you next year!

Cheers, Lisa Mill
