Services Club Memorial Ride & BBQ
Sunday, 1 May 2011

By now you all would have heard about the fire at the Services Club which decimated the building and much of the contents. Somehow the VVCMCC library survived...don't know how that happened considering the extent of the damage. Also, since the refurbishment of the Services Club, the perpetual and other trophies never made it back to the trophy cabinet so they are also safe and sound.

Mick has secured the Eastlakes Football Club car park as the starting point for the runs and we have access to the meeting rooms for our monthly meetings until our 'home' is rebuilt. Mick can report that the Club is open early and sells lovely coffee - an excellent way to start the day! We are very grateful for Eastlakes for accommodating us.

Today's run was to go to Fitz's Hill however a phone call from Mick to TAMS and the cycle club confirmed that much of the area was going to be covered by a mass of push bike riders in one of the largest bike events on the calendar. Plan B: a memorial ride to Black Mountain Peninsula. As you can see from the roll call it was a great turn out with 37 bikes in total and of course the main topic of conversation was the Services Club and the fire.

Thanks to Bill Lewis who went to the Service Club to redirect people to Eastlakes.

Mick called the riders brief and laid out the route to Black Mountain Peninsula: under Commonwealth Ave Bridge, King Edward Terrace to Flynn Drive, then onto Alexandrina to Novar and Dudley St, Cotter Rd to Lady Denman Drive and onto our BBQ site.

It was a lovely little run in perfect riding weather and we were all glad to see Ian and Fran Duvall cooking up a storm (supervised by Ian's mum Joyce). It seemed no one was in a hurry to leave with everyone enjoying the food, sunshine and the camaraderie of talking bikes and displaying our pride and joys. Overall, a great end for a devastating week.

Cheers
Lisa Mill
