Shannons WHEELS Display
Sunday, 27 March 2011

report by Mick Gentleman

"Wheels just keeps rolling on"

Once again a wonderful turn up for the Wheels display at OPH. We did a short ride firstly out to Yarralumla and then around the Lake finishing at Old Parliament House lawns.

We had 27 ridersincluding two visitors on a wide range of machines and even a UK visitor Peter Taylor who is keen go for a ride with us before he returns to England.

Bob Courtney rode in on the oldest bike, the lovely BSA B25 built in 1925 the same decade was represented with Bill Lewis on the 1929 Sloper followed by the heady years of the thirties with Peter Davey on the 1937 BSA Y13 and Ray Lipscombe with the 1939 Brough Superior. Only one taker from the 1940's was Robbie Harris on the Indian Chief (1944).

The 50's were represented by Craig, Lisa and Alan Boyd with respectively a Bantam, T100 and Gold Flash. The seventies machines were in abundance and I can't remember all of them, cause they say that if you can remember the seventies, you weren't actually there!

The roll call shows the rest of the bikes, but I can say that many or our members also had cars on display, Dick Stubbs with the lovely FC Holden and of course Bill Lewis organised the famous Pie Cart.

I had a great time chatting to aficionados' such as Graham & Barry Boyce who brought out eight Buicks including the lovely "Marquette" and the Holden guy's & girls provided me with a lovely lunch.

Wheels this year had over one thousand participants and was a great success, I would like to see a few more riders next year and perhaps a more overt display. I had lots of discussion on this with members who suggested a VVCMCC tent, signage and BBQ with other VVCMCC items such as memorabilia, movies etc.
This would of course mean a little more organisation and some commitment to staying longer, but I think from the responses we may be ready to take that plunge.

Cheers
