The Gluhwein Rally
Sunday, 15 August 2010

The 15th August dawned with typical Canberra wintry weather, grey clouds scudded across the sky & a chilly wind was blowing.
It was about 6°C when I left home to ride to the Cotter. This is typical Gluhwein weather, & I can say with some confidence that 7 or 8 of the last 10 Gluhwein events have been held in weather just like this. The other two were held late in August when early Spring weather greeted us. However this run is all about the cold: indeed it is our club's farewell to Winter, with Spring only weeks away, (we hope). One year, about five years ago, we even ran into snow near Corin Dam; that was something to remember. Bill Lewis certainly will remember it, as I know he was there in the snow on his BSA A10.

Mounted on my Velocette I was pleased with the morning & I arrived at Casuarina Sands to find that I was the first bike there, however fellows in cars had been there a while & cooking of eggs & bacon was already advanced. Peter was on the BBQ, John Broad was preparing the tea, & Peter Davey & Cath & Wayne Summerfield were there too lending a hand. I ate my fill then helped out with whatever jobs needed doing. Soon the riders began arriving, just as the first shower of the morning swept off the ranges. As usual members of the BMW & Ducati Clubs arrived, but in smaller number than most previous years. Perhaps the weather was just a little too inclement to bring riders out. VVC was well represented, with plenty of 1950s machines in evidence.

I had intended to skive off the ride to Corin Dam, as the hills were really looking dark & foreboding, indeed Peter Toet absolved the older machines from making the trip if they wished. However I could not help myself when the call came to saddle up for the Corin ride & off I went with a pack of others all on newer mounts than my own. This was grand & we sped south past the tracking station & Tidbinbilla. But a niggle appeared in my mind: I had not fueled up for the Corin trip, did I have enough petrol? I stopped at the Corin turnoff to check & the others rode past. Woops, I indeed did not have enough fuel for the 50Km return trip to the dam. If I had gone up there I would certainly have run out of petrol on the way back to the Cotter. So I rode just to Gibraltar Falls & turned around. Blast it!!

I passed two of the classic cars heading up as I came down, Mike Gentleman in his Holden was one, the other was a 1960s Falcon. Other bikes passed me as I returned to the Cotter, still making their way up to Corin. As usual the Gluhwein, Ray Scott's secret recipe, was already being supped by the 'non-Corin' brigade, of which I had planned to be a member. There was hot soup too, made by the Boyd's, & cake to eat: sausage sandwiches too. The cold had wetted everybody's appetites & I believe that all the food was eaten by the hungry throng.

I stayed until the end and the clean up. John Broad was his usual stalwart self as he drove of in his ute loaded with all the gear. I did get back to the nearest petrol station in Weston, but my tank was almost dry by then. So onward to Spring Yahoo!!.
