Uriarra Run & BBQ

Wow, just look at the turnout for this event! The VVC is really going from strength to strength. This ride was certainly popular, perhaps because the previous weekend, the Canberra Day long weekend was a total washout, virtually ruining any chance of motorcycling therapy. Indeed we even had to cancel the annual three-day away event as a result of the worse weather forecast I can remember.

This weekend coincided with the 'Triples Down Under' Rally held in Canberra this year. Several of those rally goers came to our ride, but only one, the Flints, signed the book.

The weather was fine & mild, ideal for a ride on old iron, and as you can see from the roll there was a good turnout of pre 1960 machines, including Bob Courtney on his 1945 Triumph 350, complete with Belstaff jacket & pudding basin helmet. He looked so good that I remained behind him all the way down Uriarra Road.

Other interesting machines included Graham Williams on a very tidy & now rare 1974 Suzuki GT550 Triple & Phil Donges on his 1972 Suzuki Titan, fresh from an engine rebuild after he blew it up trying to ride it to Melbourne. When I asked him whether that ride had been a little over ambitious Phil replied "I almost made it!"

Rob Harris was riding the oldest machine there, which he frequently does, devoted as he is to his Indians.

The BBQ Trailer was set up & already dishing out snags & tea when I rolled in: all the burn up brigade had long since beat me to it, babying my T120 Bonneville as I do. The BBQ was the usual mix of bravado, camaraderie & good humour which we all love & which brings fellows back time & again. Thanks are due to Bob Howden who took on the BBQ Trailer job & did it well.

On the way back home Peter Dunster & Dick Holland came steaming past me on their Bonnevilles, I did not join the chase!
