Pole's Observation Run & BBQ
Sunday, 17 May 2009

Well it was a beautiful day for a ride as we all gathered at the Club car park for the Annual Observation Run, again well organised by Pole. It was also in line with the Australian Motoring Heritage day organised by the Council of A.C.T. Motor Clubs www.actmotorclubs.org.au/go/motoring-heritage-day (Nice plug eh Bill?)

"This event was to be a little different than the last promised Pole, so don't rely on last years answers." We started by looking for the answer to the first clue at the front of the Club and then started the ride.

The next stop was Black Mountain after a lovely ride along Lady Denman drive past the Lake, Matthew's Ajay played up a little, but came good after being threatened with the trailer. One question here related to how tall are you if you were having a five star meal? Well I guess that would depend if you're sitting down or standing up!

From the top of the Mountain it was all down hill and quite a challenge for some of the older bikes on drum brakes pulling up, I understand it was down to low gear in the old Falcon as well, eh Pat?

Pole now sent us off the Blamey Square at Russell to look for the name of the building on the right of the Eagle. Some controversy ensued as we discussed "did he want the whole name or just the number?" From Russell we headed off to the Redwood forest just past the airport and I reckon I have been past there 20 thousand times and didn't know it existed.

Next were are off to the RAAF memorial on the Federal Highway and were asked to name the propeller and find out when the first tree was planted there. A nice ride to the Eagle Hawk followed, to ask the waitress the answer to this riddle "What is it the rich need, the poor have plenty of and if you eat it you will die?" I could only come up with nothing!

Finally down to Poles place for a lovely BBQ, the odd story and of course to put your answers into the box.

Now of course there were some extra questions to get at the end of the sheet, like how many wheel nuts are on a standard car wheel? Well having been a mechanic I am happy to advise there are none! Wheel nuts screw onto the Wheel Studs, Pole may have a different view though.

Some of course decided after these cozy conversations, they would have to take their answer sheets back out and adjust them a little, but it was all with good spirit.

The only vehicle to play up was Pete's lovely old Matchy, the front cylinder decided it didn't want to play anymore and it had a free ride home on the trailer.

Pole will have the answers and the winner at the next meeting maybe...........
