A lovely day dawned on 6 January for our Pre-Rally Fettling Run. It started cool, but true to the form of previous years it got hot later. Peter Toet, on breakdown duty today, instructed us on the route to the also traditional BBQ at his amazing Jacobs St house.

We were to ride to Uriarra Crossing, thence to Urriara, Cotter then back to Weston, thence onto Coppins Crossing Road & into Belconnen to Jacobs St, Evatt. The ‘short-ride’ fellows were to take the Coppins Crossing road on the first pass. Well that was what I heard at least! So off I went on the Velocette, ahead of the rest having caught some lights. Out onto Urriara Crossing Road I had a couple of bikes behind me, including Glen on his Suzuki, but where were the others? Heaven only knows.

The mystery of the missing riders was solved when I got to Urriara Homestead, when I spied the others coming the opposite way, led I think by the intrepid Peter Davey on his Brough. Later they swore that the instructions were to go to Cotter first. But it didn’t matter really & I carried on in my merry anti-clockwise route, still followed by my small band.

At the end on the Coppins Crossing Road, it got a little messy with many having different plans for a route to Evatt, which would have been a bit messy if we had experienced significant breakdown casualties. However as it happened the only breakdown was our Treasurer Col Hill who nearly fired his spark plugs into the distance, when they came loose. Sorry Col!

I seemed to be one of the last to arrive at Jacobs St & the BBQ & ‘house tours’ were well underway in the hands of Ann & her helpers. This was a grand turnout but I was a little perplexed by the number of modern machines there. The reason for my confusion is that this run is for the express purpose of you trying out your rally mounts before the Annual Rally. Thus if you break down, as Col did, then you have enough time to fix it before the Rally. And for those who don’t break down it gives you the confidence that you won’t embarrass yourself by returning on the trailer during the Rally. Oh well, I suppose everyone had their plan.

We all need to thank Peter & Ann once more for their hospitality at Jacobs St again this year. I think that this must be the 5th year of this event so we are really in their debt.

And the results of the fettling? : Well, as far as I am aware the Canberra members did very well as I cannot recollect anyone coming home with the trailer at the Rally.

Well done us all!
