Another fine spring morning in and Geoff Duddy arrived at 9.45 on his Kwaka. I had dusted off my 350 Royal Enfield for this ‘around town’ run and when Geoff saw it I am sure I heard him matter “so, not riding the Triumph today” as we geared up to ride from Belconnen to the Services Club. After the usual checking out what other people were riding and a little socialising, we headed of via King’s Avenue for the first stop at Mt Ainslie lookout. Made a pleasant change just relaxing and admiring the view rather than the rushed search for clues as on Pole’s observation run.

After quite a leisurely ride down Parkes Way, myself and a group of riders ground slowly up Black Mountain behind Anthony and Caroline in their WWII Jeep, and I remember thinking to myself smugly ‘ha, my 350 is faster than that’. At the top some of us took the short cut into the parking area and lined the bikes up for a regroup and good look around.

The last mountain to climb was via Cotter Road to Mount Stromlo, and as we passed very close to Black Mountain Peninsula I notice some members were unable to resist the overwhelming urge to take a left turn and go directly to the lunch stop! Those of us that soldiered on spent less time at the last stop and headed directly back to the lunch stop as it had already been decided to give Red Hill a miss this time round. (We only climb mountains ?). I hadn’t been up Mount Stromlo for some time and it was reassuring to see some rebuilding in progress after the fires.

Back at Black Mountain Peninsula Dick and Gerry had arrived earlier with the club BBQ trailer and with help from John Waldron who I believe rode directing there on his Bantam, had plenty of snags, onions and hot water ready. (not like the cooks last time we were there.)

Ollie Walker on his Matchless outfit had the only mechanical problems, compounded somewhat when we realised that outfits don’t fit on the new club backup trailer. Peter Toet came to the rescue, going home and getting his trailer.

So another good ride came to an end. Thanks to Dick Holland for bringing the BBQ trailer and together with Gerry Hampson and John Waldron for the Cooking. Thanks also to Peter Wilson and Annemie for towing the backup trailer.
