Last year in March, we had a very successful run to Gunning for lunch (31 bikes) so this
year Dick suggested that we go to Dalton Pub for lunch, just to go somewhere
different for a change. The day started out with a very confusing ride to The
Services Club, with numerous main roads closed for the Canberra Fun Run. Plans
were changed fairly quickly for the exit from Canberra and we made our way towards Sutton, Gundaroo, Gunning and Dalton via the Oaks Estate shortcut.
While passing through the Oaks Estate shortcut Ann’s Thunderbird started running on one
cylinder, so onto the back-up trailer for the bike and Ann got to pillion on
Peter Davey’s Brough Superior as far as Gundaroo and then on Peter’s Yamaha
650.
There was a bit of regrouping at Gundaroo, also a beer sherbet for some of the thirstier
travellers amongst us. We also met up with a group of well known faces from Sydney, including Col Brenchley and some
of the Goulburn boys.
Onwards to Gunning and hard left past the Courthouse and another 15kms to Dalton. Dick had spent considerable
effort teeing up the Pub to expect around 35 - 40 patrons for lunch, wellll,
nothing happens quickly in Dalton apparently, and the staff were very slow off the mark. Some riders
were still waiting for meals two hours after arrival, however to make matters
worse they started giving out numbers, then stopped and in the end, you counted
yourself lucky if you got anything like what you ordered. Steve Keough rode in
on his way back from a Triumph Register rally, whilst Rod Greschke and Barbi
Osborn arrived in Rod’s lovely 1949 MK 5 Jag.
By 2 pm everyone was keen to head back. Some went via Jerrawa to Yass, whilst others went Jerrawa to Gunning. In any case it was into a headwind and we all ended up back in Canberra, tired but after a good ride. Many thanks to Dick for organising the ride and to Alan Hayes and Leonie Heffernan for bringing the back-up
trailer. See all on the next run.
